North Pole teacher dedicated to literacy
Segler, a first- and second-grade teacher at North Pole Elementary School, has made it her life’s work to teach her young students one of the most important and enduring skills they could ever attain — the ability to read.
She has spent the past 16 years in a classroom full of six- to eight-year-olds, teaching them not only Fairbanks North Star Borough curriculum but also the skills necessary to succeed later in life. It’s these skills, rather than the specific knowledge points of the state’s education standards, she finds most valuable for her students.
“I teach people not subjects. It’s the connection you make with people that’s more important than any subject,” Segler said. “To me this piece of paper’s not valuable. The time you spend with your children is valuable. It’s the people time that’s important.”Read full article

SCHOOL GARDEN STARTS
NPE has undertaken two school garden projects at the end of the school year. The first is a lengthy bed of perennials in the front of the building. The second is a vegetable garden by our parent pick up area. The purpose of both projects is to 1) beautify the school campus and 2) provide outdoor education and learning opportunities for students. It is impressive how quickly students and staff have finished both projects. Even more impressive have been the generous contributions of students, staff, community members, and local businesses to make this happen. We have laid the groundwork to extend these projects even further in future years.
